Grade 1 listed 2 stage porch of a 16th century wealthy cloth merchants house on Fore Street in Chard, Somerset.
Work carried out
Removal of 20th century failed cementitious mortar repairs to reveal the extent of the Hamstone decay beneath. Reinforcement of parapet walls and application of lime render to the inner face. Removal of aging lead work to flat roof and installation of new leadwork to LSA guidelines.
Extensive mortar repairs and stone replacements were carried out to the lower stages. The condition of the hamstone was far more severe than expected and 8 mullions had to be fully replaced. Existing masonry was stabilised using stainless pins and wire formwork used prior to lime mortar repairs.
Windows were removed and restored where required and leaded lights were reformed retaining existing glazing.
After all repairs were carried out the stonework was consolidated using lime water and a sacrificial shelter coat.
